Executive coaching is a series of conversations between the coach and client in which they work together towards identification and attainment of the client’s goals. In some cases the client will already have a very clear idea of what they wish to achieve. However, we find in many cases, the real goal turns out to be something different from what had been expected and emerges during coaching.
Clients may be seeking to discuss and reflect on alternative approaches to problems and opportunities or they may welcome a reflective conversation, challenge, support, confidence boosting, or motivation. Those in a position of authority may be wishing to develop their leadership skills. It is essential that companies give extra support to talented managers new in post and also help staff deal with many commonplace challenges such as change, stress, relationship issues or setting and reaching corporate goals.
It is the coach’s role to build rapport, to give complete focus to the client, to believe in their capabilities and also to be prepared to challenge or ask open questions that promote real thinking and which will sometimes take the client into unexplored territory. The coach does not direct, unlike the trainer or sometimes, the mentor. The coaching skill is in helping their clients to learn, to grow and to achieve sustainable change.
Coaching is increasingly being used as a lower cost and more effective technique than sending staff on expensive training courses. Research shows that the lessons of many training courses are lost within a short space of time. Lessons learned for ourselves and put into practice through alterations in behaviour or approach, are far likely to be longer lasting and more effective.
